Lessons Learned from Avian Influenza Outbreaks in Virginia

چکیده
Early developments in commercial hatchery technology, artificial incubation and brooding, marketing, diagnostic testing, and key infrastructure improvements from 1900 to 1950 contributed to the growth and present prominence of the poultry industry in the Shenandoah Valley and its importance in the agricultural economy of Virginia. In 2003, Virginia ranked 5, 9, and 31 in the nation for commercial turkey, broiler, and egg production, respectively, and the value of the state’s turkey, broiler, and egg production was $692 million. The expansion and density of poultry production in the Shenandoah Valley has posed challenges to the industry and regulatory officials in the control of contagious diseases like avian influenza (AI).

Applying conserved peptides of NS1 Protein of avian influenza virus to differentiate infected from vaccinated chickens
Avian influenza (AI) is a highly contagious disease in poultry and outbreaks can have dramatic economic and health implications. For effective disease surveillance, rapid and sensitive assays are needed to detect antibodies against AI virus (AIV) proteins. In order to support eradication efforts of avian influenza (AI) infections in poultry, the implementation of “DIVA” vaccination strategies, ...

Sixteen avian influenza (AI) H9N2 viruses were isolated from disease outbreaks in different parts of Iranduring (1998–2001). These AI isolates were used for pathogenicity, haemagglutinin (HA) gene variation andphylogenetic analysis. Results in both pathogenicity tests and HA gene cleavage site sequence detectionrepresented a non-highly pathogenic feature for all Iranian AI isolates studied. The...

BACKGROUND: Avian influenza (AI) viruses have been isolated from a wide diversity of free-living avian species representing several orders. Since 1998, H9N2 AI outbreaks have been one of the major problems in Iranian poultry industry. In 2006, H5N1 was reported in swans in the north of Iran first , but until now there has been no official report from commercial flocks in Iran. OBJECTIVES: The...
متن کاملDetection and Isolation of H9N2 Subtype of Avian Influenza Virus in House Sparrows (Passer domesticus) of Ahvaz, Iran
Avian influenza (AI) is an acute infectious disease with worldwide significance causing extensive economic losses in the poultry industry. Avian influenza viruses (AIVs) belong to the family Orthomyxoviridae and categorized in the genus influenza virus A. These viruses have been isolated from more than 100 species of free-living birds. Migratory birds are considered as reservoirs for AIVs and a...
متن کاملSEARUMS: Studying Epidemiology of Avian Influenza Rapidly Using Modeling and Simulation
Effectively combating avian influenza using constrained resources requires strategic planning and preemptive deployment of countermeasures. However, success of such proactive approaches is contingent on accurate and rapid forecasting of epicenters and time lines of outbreaks using epidemiological analyses. A pragmatic and effective methodology for such epidemiological analysis is computer-based...
